Miracle escape for Qld light plane pilot

A pilot in Queensland has had a lucky escape after he walked away unharmed from a light plane crash.

The 69-year-old was trying to land his single engine Beechcraft at a Gold Coast airfield at Coombabah at about 9.45am on Sunday when he lost control and crashed into bushland.

"As he's coming in for his final descent the plane has lost power; it's had some sort of mechanical failure," a police spokeswoman said.

Despite extensive wing damage, the plane's cabin stayed intact and the pilot was able to walk away from the crash.

He was taken to hospital for observation but wasn't injured.
