Mid-winter heatwave for Queensland

Tops of over 30 degrees are predicted for parts of Queensland on Wednesday, with a high pressure system driving up temperatures.

Tops of 35C are expected in the northwest of the state, while Brisbane is heading for a top of 30C and Ipswich 33C.

Weather Bureau forecaster Sam Campbell said the temperatures in the southeast were 10 degrees above average.

"However we do often see these warmer days towards the end of August, we often see hot air masses building up over the interior of the continent, and then troughs or cold fronts moving through and dragging that hot air down into central and southeastern Queensland," Mr Campbell said.

The temperature will get warmer towards the end of the week, with a top of 31C expected on Thursday for Brisbane, before falling back to a predicted top of 22C on Saturday.

It follows a warmer than average winter for Queensland, with the warmest average July temperatures ever recorded.
