Mental health checks for stabbing accused

A Brisbane man accused of trying to stab a homeless man to death will be assessed by mental health professionals.

The 26-year-old appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday charged with attempted murder, grievous bodily harm and other offences after allegedly attacking another man in the inner-city suburb of West End on Sunday.

A 48-year-old man is recovering in hospital with wounds to his chest and face.

The court heard the younger man was under an involuntary treatment order for mental illness and would be further assessed by doctors on Monday.

Magistrate Jacqui Payne said criminal proceedings against the man were suspended while he was dealt with under the Mental Health Act.

He was remanded in custody and is expected to apply for bail next Monday.
