Men hit with shovel in 'unprovoked' attack

Two men are recovering in hospital after they were bashed with a shovel during an unprovoked attack in far north Queensland, police say.

A 22-year-old German national was allegedly struck in the face at a Tinaroo Dam camp ground in Atherton on Sunday evening.

A 20-year-old Saint Lucia man was also hit with the shovel during the incident, police said.

Both men were taken to Atherton Hospital, with the 22-year-old suffering serious facial injuries.

Police have charged a 20-year-old Redlynch man with one count each of grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning bodily harm and common assault.

He is expected to appear in the Mareeba Magistrates Courts on January 27.
