A Mauritian official accused of sexually assaulting an athlete at the Commonwealth Games village will appear in court later in the month.

The official from the Mauritius Commonwealth Games team was on Friday charged by Queensland Police with one count of sexual assault.

Authorities allege the 52-year-old assaulted the 26-year-old woman at the athletes' village last Thursday.

The man has since stepped down from his role and left the facility.

He is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on April 17.
