Massive crowd tipped for Riverfire party

Super hornets, army choppers and a pyrotechnics extravaganza are about to light up Brisbane's skies in an epic celebration on the city's river.

As many as 500,000 people are expected to line the banks of Brisbane River on Saturday to watch the annual Riverfire event.

They will see acrobatic displays from army choppers and super hornet aircraft before being treated to a spectacular fireworks display.

The best vantage points include the Victoria Bridge, South Bank, Kangaroo Point Cliffs, Captain Burke Park, Wilson's Lookout and City Riverwalk.

Inspector Jo Henderson said police would be out in force to ensure everyone could safely enjoy the event.

Spectators have been urged to get public transport to the celebration, which caps off the popular Brisbane Festival.

TransLink spokesperson Miguel Holland said there would be more than 420 extra services for Riverfire across the network with extra buses, trains and ferries.

There will be free travel home between 7.30pm and 9.30pm on buses from the Cultural Centre, South Bank and Mater Hill and trains departing from South Brisbane, South Bank and Roma Street stations.
