Man arrested after Mt Isa standoff

A 21-year-old man is in custody after a four-hour siege in Mount Isa.

The man is believed to have spent Monday afternoon holed up in a house on Short Street, Mount Isa, with police, including negotiators, on the scene.

The man threatened police and some media reports suggested he brandished a rifle at officers.

The standoff led to stretches of Short Street, Simpson Street, George Street and Abel Smith Parade being cordoned off, but they have since been reopened.

"The situation was resolved shortly before 5pm with officers entering the garage at the address and taking a 21-year-old man into custody," police said in a statement.

Officers had declared the incident an "emergent situation" under the Public Safety and Preservation Act after arriving at the Pioneer address around 12.45pm.

Staff at the nearby St Mary MacKillop Early Learning Centre on Short Street said a number of parents had rushed to collect their children after news of the standoff broke.
