Man found alive in Gulf of Carpentaria

A fisherman, who went missing in the Gulf of Carpentaria after his boat capsized, has been found alive.

The man triggered an emergency beacon at 1.20am on Saturday, sparking a large air and sea search by police and members of the public.

A rescue aircraft located a vessel about 35 nautical miles northwest of Karumba, but no one was aboard.

The search continued until a helicopter spotted the man alive at 2pm on Saturday.

A volunteer marine rescue vessel retrieved him from the water.
