Man in custody after Gold Coast chase

A man has been remanded in custody after allegedly crashing his car into bicycle rickshaws on the Gold Coast's glitter strip and leading police on an hour-long chase before hitting a power pole.

Michael John Davison, 35, appeared briefly in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday morning after the Sunday night chase.

He was remanded in custody to reappear on Thursday.

After being intercepted for an earlier traffic offence, Davison allegedly sped off, forcing officers to jump out of the way, and crashed into the rickshaws during the getaway.

Police used spikes to puncture the ute's wheels, but he allegedly continued driving for another kilometre before finally losing control and crashing into a power pole.
