A woman is dead and at least five others are seriously injured after a car crashed into a house where a funeral was being held in far north Queensland.

The vehicle drove into the house at Kowanyama in Cape York about 10.30am this morning.

It was believed at first that the fatality was a man but police later clarified a woman had died.

Two doctors and two nurses from the Royal Flying Doctor Service happened to be attending a clinic nearby and were among those first at the scene.

Two planes from the service are en route and due to arrive around 1pm.

Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service chief executive Michel Lok said at least 10 doctors and nurses would be on the ground to deal with the incident.

Mr Lok added the health service had activated its disaster management plan although the exact number of casualties is unknown.

The man who was driving the vehicle is assisting police.

Police said a co-ordinated response was being organised, with investigators and scientific officers expected to be flown to the community.

The remote town, located on the Gulf of Carpentaria side of Cape York, has a population of a little more than 1000 people.

More to come.
