Man dies after being restrained in Cairns

A man has died after being restrained during a violent domestic incident involving an elderly woman in Cairns.

Police say the man got into a dispute with a 74-year-old woman at a home in suburban Edmonton on Monday afternoon.

The pair both lived at the home, police have confirmed.

Two other men came to the woman's aid and restrained the 47-year-old, but he soon passed out and died at the scene.

The home is now a crime scene.

The elderly woman suffered a facial injury during the incident and was treated in hospital.

Detective Acting Inspector Rob Campbell told reporters on Tuesday a report would be prepared for the coroner and it would be clearer if any charges would be laid once a preliminary autopsy report had been obtained.
