Man bailed after alleged Qld rampage

A man accused of a violent rampage in which he allegedly assaulted three people and got hit by a car in Cairns has been granted bail to attend rehab.

Zay Rima Edmond Oscar Tamou, 27, allegedly assaulted two women at the Cairns Villa and Leisure Park last month before forcing one of them to drive him a short distance.

Police say he was hit by a car as he tried to escape the scene and later assaulted a male sergeant in a nearby house.

He faces a string of charges including serious assault, wilful damage and assault occasioning bodily harm.

In his opposition to bail, Senior Constable Sean O'Shea said Tamou had a long history of contravening court directions and was on bail at the time of the alleged offences.

But Cairns Magistrate Jane Bentley noted Tamou had a supportive family who had organised to take him to a rehabilitation centre in Brisbane and to gain employment after treatment.

She said the man's uncle had tragically died before the alleged offences.

"You are before the court on very serious charges," she said on Monday.

"This is your opportunity to rehabilitate yourself before sentence."

Tamou was granted bail on the condition he does not return to Cairns.

His matter is next due at Cairns Magistrate Court on February 22.
