An intruder who allegedly stabbed an elderly man during a Queensland home invasion has been arrested more than nine months after the incident.

The 63-year-old victim was set upon early one morning last September after he disturbed a man trying to break into his Starkey Street home at Wellington Point, on Brisbane's bayside.

Police said he was able to fight back during the "frenzied" attack but was stabbed four times in the chest and thigh.

During the incident, the attacker referred to himself as "a broken man" and said: "I could kill you if I wanted to".

The victim slowed his bleeding with a towel and yelled for help.

Witnesses saw a man matching the description of the intruder in mangroves, covered in mud, not long after the attack.

Police on Thursday arrested a 19-year-old man over the incident - more than nine months later.

He will face the Cleveland Magistrates Court on Friday on one count each of attempted murder, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm or transmit serious disease, unlawful wounding and trespassing.
