People wanting to register as volunteers for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games are being urged to get in early so they don't miss out on a spot.

Registration opens online on Monday morning, however there's already been about 35,000 expressions of interest in the 15,000 volunteer spots.

Games chairman Peter Beattie said many people would likely miss out on spots, but it was great to see so many interested in helping out with the event.

"But I just say to those Queenslanders who don't succeed in the end, and we hope you all do, there will be other opportunities, Mr Beattie told reporters on Sunday"

In particular, he stressed that all Queenslanders would be "games ambassadors" in the lead-up to and during the event, and he urged everyone to show their "Queensland smiley faces" to visitors.

The majority of volunteers are needed for the Gold Coast sites, however there are also events being held in Brisbane as well as Cairns and Townsville.

Volunteer applications open from 9am on Monday on the official games website, and are open to people across Australia.
