Long road to justice over Bali bombings

MORE THAN A DECADE SINCE THE 2002 BALI BOMBINGS, KEY PLAYERS ARE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE:

* Three simultaneous bombings are carried out on October 12, 2002 at a popular tourist spot in Kuta, Bali

* 202 people killed, including 88 Australians, while another 209 are injured

* Two of the attackers are also killed

* Indonesian authorities identify extremist group Jemaah Islamiah (JI) as being behind the attack

* Ali Amrozi bin Haji Nurhasyim, who bought a van used in the attack, is arrested on November 5

* A second bombing takes place in 2003, this time targeting the JW Marriott Hotel

* Others involved in the 2002 plot are rounded up including Amrozi's two brothers, Ali Ghufron and Ali Imron, as well as Imam Samudra

* Riduan Isomuddin, known as Hambali and alleged to have overseen the 2002 and 2003 attacks, is captured in Bangkok, Thailand in 2003

* Dr Azahari bin Husin, believed to have been the technical mastermind behind the attacks, is killed in a raid on his Indonesian hideout, following additional arrests and convictions

* After serving more than two years for conspiracy, Abu Bakar Bashir, the former spiritual leader of JI, is freed in 2006 and subsequently cleared of any involvement

* Hambali is detained in Guantanamo Bay without charge

* Amrozi, Samudra and Mukhlas are executed by firing squad on November 9, 2008

* Dulmatin, who helped to assemble the van bomb and explosive vests used in the attacks, is killed in a shootout with police on the outskirts of Jakarta in 2010

* Patek, the last of the main players, is captured in Pakistan in 2011

* Abu Bakar Bashir is jailed in 2011 over a terrorist training camp found in Aceh, Sumatra

* Patek is sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2012 after being found guilty of mass murder for his role in the attack.

* Hambali is charged with multiple offences over the 2002 attacks in June, 2017.
