Qld parliament supports ethanol mandate

The Queensland parliament has voted to support an ethanol mandate on the state's fuel.

The Liberal National Party put forward the motion on Wednesday night.

It also called for the formation of an implementation board to consult stakeholders and consumers, determine preferred ethanol levels for fuel and determine time frames for the introduction of mandated ethanol levels.

Labor supported the idea, but called for an amendment seeking a broader approach to biofuels and to acknowledge the fact Labor had already introduced a bill to start the implementation of an ethanol mandate.

The party also criticised the LNP for not addressing the issue when it was in government.

"(It's) pure political opportunism and you stand condemned by it," Agriculture Minister Bill Byrne said of the LNP.

Katter's Australian Party asked for more, calling for a set 10 per cent ethanol mandate that would increase incrementally.

Party leader Rob Katter, who's regularly pushed for an ethanol mandate, said the move would be good for agriculture, the environment and fuel prices.

The parliament voted against Mr Katter's amendment, but Labor's got over the line with the support of embattled MP Billy Gordon and Speaker Peter Wellington's deciding vote.
