LNP pledges to fix nightmare highway spot

Brisbane drivers would no longer have to battle a troublesome highway bottleneck, thanks to an $170 million upgrade under a returned LNP government.

The tricky M1-Gateway merge will get two more southbound lanes, Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson announced on Wednesday.

He said the multimillion-dollar plan would improve traffic flow and ease congestion at the "nightmare" Gateway-Pacific Motorway junction.

The bus lane would be lengthened and an extra 350 park-and-ride car spaces also installed as part of the revamp.

"Everyone has had the experience of being frustrated at (this) merge," Mr Emerson said.

"This project solves those problems."

But asked about funding details for the project, and if asset leases would foot the bill, Mr Emerson simply insisted: "This is part of our Strong Choices plan, yes."

The LNP's Ian Walker holds an 11.1 per cent majority in the local seat of Mansfield, after a massive swing against Labor at the 2012 election.

The infrastructure announcement follows Premier Campbell Newman's pledging of a $532 million duplication of the railway between Landsborough and Beerburrum on the Sunshine Coast earlier this week.

Seventeen days before voters hit the polls, Mr Emerson declined to say if the highway upgrade would be the LNP's final roads election pitch.
