Quadruple amputee to take part in 5km charity race

A Brisbane father who lost all four limbs to streptococcal will take part in a 5km charity race to help an amputee support group.

Matthew Ames hopes to highlight the difficulties facing the Amputees and Families Support Group Queensland, the Brisbane Times has reported.

The organisation has reportedly been told it will lose all its state government funding - an amount totalling $46,000.

Mr Ames said in a letter to friends that the support group had helped him "physically and mentally" during his recovery.

He said it was vital the group continue to receive funding to continue its work in assisting new amputees.

Mr Ames lost his limbs aged 39 in June 2012, when a case of streptococcal resulted in a severe bout of toxic shock.

He was not expected to survive, but the father of four battled through his illness and is now focused on regaining his ability to move independently, though the necessary prosthetics could cost up to $500,000.
