Last chance to see Qld govt building

Brisbane's venerable Executive Building will throw open its doors this weekend for the last time before being demolished.

The distinctive building at 100 George St in the CBD has been the official headquarters of the Queensland government since it was opened in 1971 by then-leader Sir Joh Bjelke Petersen.

However it has now been replaced with the even more imposing 1 William Street tower, commissioned by Campbell Newman during his one term as premier.

There had been moves to save the "Exec", however, it is due to be demolished along with several other formerly government-owned buildings in the same precinct as part of the multi-billion-dollar Queen's Wharf development.

All public servants have now moved from the George St facility into the new Executive Building, with the public able to take guided tours on Saturday.

The edifice has housed nine premiers over the last 45 years, with visitors this weekend also able to access information booths telling them of the history of the building and the governments which have called it home.

After this weekend work will begin to demolish the building, with the Queen's Wharf project due to be completed by 2024.
