Campbell Newman placed ahead of main rival Jones in Ashgrove

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman's main challenger in Ashgrove has been put last on the ballot paper.

Labor candidate and former minister Kate Jones is last of five contenders for the Brisbane seat that Mr Newman holds by a margin of 5.7 per cent.

The premier is second on the ticker behind independent Connie Cicchini and followed by independent Peter Jeremijenko, Green candidate Robert Hogg and finally Ms Jones.

She's still widely tipped to reclaim Ashgrove, which she lost to the premier in the 2012 election.

Ms Jones will join 433 candidates contesting 89 seats across Queensland.

Nominations closed at midday Tuesday, with the LNP, Labor and the Greens fielding candidates in every single seat.

The Palmer United Party is standing in 50 seats, but Katter's Australian Party (KAP) will only contest 11 regional seats.

Pauline Hanson's One Nation is also fielding candidates in the same number of seats as the KAP.

Ms Hanson herself is second last on the ballot paper for the seat of Lockyer, west of Brisbane.

It's not only candidate numbers that have increased, Electoral Commission of Queensland says more than 60,000 voters have updated their details so they can take part in the January 31 election.

The premier's position on the ballot relative to his rival Ms Jones is good news for him, even if he's not letting on.

"It's about ultimately people exercising their vote as it is in every part of the state," Mr Newman said.

"This election is about more than any one electorate, it's about the future of Queensland."
