A kangaroo has been filmed taking an afternoon dip in Queensland as amazed onlookers filmed the special encounter.

Swimmers noticed the two little ears in the ocean at Cylinder Beach on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island).

Brisbane woman Catherine Edwards was taken by surprise when she saw the marsupial.

"Oh my god … hey Skippy," she said in the video.

Edwards later described the encounter as a "magical moment".

"We just felt really full of gratitude and like we'd been welcomed to his patch," she said.

The kangaroo later hopped out of the water and had a quick shake to dry off before it left the beach.

"I think he may have gone up for a sundowner at the pub," Edwards said.
