Dad cleared of murder attempt on daughter

A young father accused of trying to murder his infant daughter by forcing her to swallow a coin and noxious medications has walked free from a Queensland court.

The 21-year-old man had pleaded not guilty during his trial in Brisbane's Supreme Court after being accused of trying to kill the four-month-old girl in August 2013.

There were relieved sobs from the public gallery on Wednesday afternoon as the jury delivered a not guilty verdict on four counts, including attempted murder, malicious act with intent and common assault charges, after about two hours of deliberations.

The man smiled in the dock as the 12-person jury announced the outcome and hugged supporters as he left the court precinct.

He declined to comment to waiting media.

The prosecution had unsuccessfully alleged he tried to kill the child by making her ingest a 10 cent coin and, when that didn't work, poison her with medication while she was in hospital.

But defence lawyer James Benjamin told the jury during the trial no one had seen the father give the coin or the medication to the baby and that the evidence against him was circumstantial.
