Australia's biggest proposed coal mine is doomed and should be scrapped now that the developer has stood down six key contractors, environmentalists say.

Greenpeace has called on federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt to revoke the licence for the $16.5 billion Carmichael coal mine in central Queensland.

Their fresh criticism comes in the wake of news developer Adani has stood down project managers Parsons Brinckerhoff and Korean construction company Posco.
