Human remains found in crocodile during search for missing fisherman in Far North Queensland

Human remains have been found inside a crocodile as part of the search into a missing fisherman in Far North Queensland.

Andrew Heard, 69, left for a fishing trip near Hinchinbrook Island near Townsville on Thursday afternoon.

He never returned and his boat was later found overturned and damaged.

Queensland Police today confirmed the grim discovery.

"Police can confirm human remains have been located inside a crocodile which was removed by officers from the Department of Environment and Science yesterday near Hinchinbrook Island," a statement read.

"The 4.2-metre crocodile, which is believed to be the one involved in the death of a 69-year-old man, was examined by a specialist in Cairns overnight with human remains being located inside.

"Police investigations continue with officers preparing a report for the Coroner."

At 2.30am on Friday, officials found Mr Heard's 2.5-metre dinghy near the mouth of Gayundah Creek.

The boat was examined by experts from the Environment Department.

Department of Environment and Science (DES) officers said yesterday afternoon they had found and euthanised a four-metre croc.

John Stewart, a friend of Mr Heard, called what had happened as "shattering".

"Everyone's just feeling numb and lost that such a fine man has gone," he said.

Another friend, Andy Murray, said: "In many years of sailing, meeting many beautiful people, Andy was one of the best."

Mr Heard is understood to have battled cancer.

Flags have been lowered to half mast at the Cairns Cruising Yacht Squadron.
