Holmes takes vacant Qld chief justice post

THE CARMODY-HOLMES TRANSITION:

* June 2014 - The state's legal fraternity reacts angrily when Premier Campbell Newman elevates Chief Magistrate Carmody to chief justice

* August 2014 - Not a single Supreme Court judge attends a public welcoming ceremony for Carmody

* March 2015 - Justice Alan Wilson uses his retirement speech to say the Carmody appointment had plunged the court into crisis. He accuses Carmody of calling his colleagues "snakes and scum".

* April 2015 - Lawyers handling an appeal by Daniel Morcombe's killer say Carmody should be disqualified from hearing the case because he met child protection campaigner Hetty Johnston

* May 8, 2015 - An email exchange surfaces revealing Court of Appeal president Margaret McMurdo has refused to work with Carmody in any court

* May 12, 2015 - Carmody takes sick leave for a month, citing a back problem, but says he has every intention of finishing his term

* May 25, 2015 - Carmody says his position has become untenable and reveals he's offered to quit, as long as he's compensated and the government acts to reform the courts

* June 11, 2015 - Carmody's extends his sick leave by two weeks. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says he didn't advise the government.

* July 1, 2015 - Carmody resigns as chief justice three days after returning to work, saying he wanted to "restore the dignity of the judiciary and the public confidence in its ability to administer justice".

* September 7, 2015 - Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk unveils Court of Appeal Justice Catherine Holmes as the state's new chief justice
