Heavy rain causes flooding in central Qld

Severe storms have dumped more than 250mm of rain in parts of central Queensland, causing flash flooding and road closures.

Residents are being warned the deluge is far from over, with more heavy falls forecast on Wednesday and conditions not expected to ease until the weekend.

Sarina, south of Mackay, copped the heaviest downpour with 302mm of rain falling overnight.

Nearby Prospect Creek recorded 255mm of rain, while 233mm fell at Mackay Airport.

The deluge caused many roads to go under water, with some still off limits on Wednesday morning.

As the clean-up begins, the Bureau of Meteorology is warning residents on the central coast to keep an eye on the forecast with further downpours expected from Rockhampton to Bowen.

"We could get some more heavy rainfall totals like that over the next 24 hours," forecaster Andrew Buffalino told AAP.

Showers were expected to continue over the central coast for the next four to five days but should begin to ease from Friday, he added.
