Half our force should be women: Qld police

Queensland's top cop says he wants half the state's police officers to be women.

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart has launched a week-long campaign to attract more women to the police force, as part of the Queensland government's inaugural Women's Week.

"Our applicant pool, we'd like to get that to 50/50 and somewhere in the future our organisation would mirror those numbers," he said on Monday.

Currently, just one in four police officers and recruits are women.

"In the last couple of years we've seen ups and downs in those numbers, and that was one of the reasons that spurred us on to make an aspirational target," Mr Stewart said.

"From initial application to when people walk through the front door, we see women drop off at a greater rate." Mr Stewart didn't nominate a timeframe to meet the target but said some new recruit pools were already a 50/50 gender split.

"We've got a long way to go in this organisation - the level of true flexibility that will come in the years ahead."

The stories of 10 successful female officers will be shared as part of Women's Week.

As of June last year, QPS employed 11,875 police officers and recruits with 3099 of those women.
