Still no Sunshine Coast rail funding: LNP

A major railway upgrade that would ease traffic between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast is a step closer to reality but the Queensland opposition says there's no money to fund it.

The Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Project, which is designed to take cars off the Bruce Hwy, is the first project to reach the approval stage of the state government's streamlined Building Queensland Pipeline.

The Pipeline was set up in late 2015 to cut back on the bureaucratic red tape slowing down major infrastructure projects.

Deputy Premier Jackie Trad said the government would now assess the project.

"(This project is) a major priority for the Sunshine Coast community which will provide a more integrated and effective transport system and improve connectivity in South East Queensland," Ms Trad said in a statement.

However state opposition spokesman Andrew Powell said Sunshine Coast residents already know they need a new rail line.

"All Sunshine Coast residents have got from this tired Palaszczuk Labor government about this vital project is lip-service," Mr Powell said in a statement.

"There is no cash on the table from Annastacia Palaszczuk for this much-needed infrastructure project."

There are 19 other proposals recommended for further development in the Pipeline, including upgrades for the Port of Townsville and a new correctional precinct for Southern Queensland.
