Revheads going to the Gold Coast 600 are being warned to factor in slowdowns to and from the popular V8s event.

The RACQ urges race-goers to plan for road closures and traffic delays associated with the annual race, which begins on Friday.

A number of streets will be closed including Ferny Avenue, parts of The Esplanade and Main Beach Parade, while the Gold Coast Highway at Macintosh Island will be reduced to two lanes.

RACQ spokeswoman Renee Smith said visitors to the Surfers Paradise area risked being caught by surprise by the changed traffic conditions.

"Visitors to the coast often underestimate the impact the Gold Coast 600 has on roads," she said.

More than 190,000 people are expected at the event, which runs until Sunday.

Ms Smith said public transport was the best option for people attending the Gold Coast 600 given there was limited parking options close to the track.
