Gold Coast police launch internal review

Gold Coast police are reviewing their operational procedures just eight months after launching an investigation into their culture.

The Future of Policing review is specifically looking at staffing at its super stations at Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and Southport, and whether there is a need to staff them 24 hours a day.

"Up until now there was a need to have police officers there; in the future will that need exist or will there be a greater need for those resources to be moved somewhere else?" said Assistant District Officer Superintendent Craig Hanlon.

"There would have to be a very significant evidence base to change the way we're policing now."

However Supt Hanlon said all ideas were "on the table".

He said the review would also examine if the three stations were still needed when they were located within 10 kilometres of each other, especially considering the rapid growth north and west.

About 300 of the Gold Coast's 850 police officers are located at Surfers Paradise.

Shadow treasurer John-Paul Langbroek said it was "imperative" the busy station remained.

Supt Hanlon said while the review may consider relocating staff to a more "optimum" building, there would always be a police station at Surfers.

"Any review we do is about improving policing," he said.

"We would not make any decision that would even suggest there's a reduction in policing services."

While there's no timeline for the review, Supt Hanlon said any significant changes would not be implemented until after the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Gold Coast police were forced to examine their culture following a series of criminal allegations levelled against officers in recent years, with a review launched last August.
