Gold Coast mayor declares victory

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has declared he's been successful in his quest to lead the city into the Commonwealth Games.

Mr Tate has a commanding lead in the Gold Coast council mayoral race, with 64.34 per cent of the vote after counting was completed at 74 out of 274 booths.

"The city wants me to lead the city as we march towards the Commonwealth Games," he told the Nine Network.
