Gold Coast airport crash driver remanded

The man who allegedly crashed a car into the doors of the Gold Coast airport terminal has mental health issues, a court has heard.

Daniel Leonard Cassidy, who turns 35 on Tuesday, was expected to face Southport Magistrates Court on Monday on eight charges including armed robbery and serious assault of a public officer.

Cassidy was arrested after allegedly stealing a car from a golf course, trying to steal another car at the airport and then crashing into the domestic terminal building on Saturday.

Witnesses have told the media how people were forced to jump for their lives as the car smashed into the airport building.

A duty lawyer told the court he'd been unable to receive any directions from Cassidy despite lengthy attempts.

He said it wasn't in Cassidy's best interests to face court.

"There are reasons, and good reasons, why he should be spared an appearance in court," the lawyer said.

The matter was adjourned until Tuesday.

Cassidy's father was in the court but didn't speak as he left the building.
