GC2018 bosses take over athletes' village

Commonwealth Games organisers have been given the keys to the athletes' village for next year's event on the Gold Coast.

The $550 million Parklands site was officially handed over by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) on Monday.

GOLDOC will now have 184 days to transform the site into a home-away-from-home for the 6,600 Commonwealth athletes and officials who will descend on the Gold Coast in April.

GOLDOC Chairman Peter Beattie says the athletes' village is one of the marquee developments for next year's Games.

Following the event, the site will be transformed into a health and knowledge precinct, adjacent to both the Gold Coast University Hospital and Griffith University.

"This will be the most important legacy from the Games," Mr Beattie said.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says with six months to go until the Games begin, delivery of the athletes' village site means all major construction has been completed.

"Our major venues are completed, on time and on budget," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"This has been a real team effort to get to this stage ... this will transform the Gold Coast."
