Fury over destruction of Qld rape evidence

Queensland's opposition leader is pushing for a corruption probe after police destroyed evidence in an alleged gang rape case.

Liberal National Party leader Deb Frecklington and the victim are demanding a Crime and Corruption Commission probe into why evidence in the rape case, and others, was destroyed.

Ms Frecklington said it's likely there will never be justice for the woman, who says she was raped by at least four men on her 21st birthday in 1995.

The unnamed woman has told the ABC how detectives advised her that forensic evidence had been destroyed, including the dress and underwear she was wearing when she was attacked.

Ms Frecklington said the woman wants to ensure the same thing never happens to anyone else.

"This was a violent gang rape and this poor woman now has heard from police that her evidence has been destroyed ... including CCTV footage, (a) rape kit, clothing," the LNP leader told ABC radio on Thursday

"It is important that we have an external investigation, away from the police, so we can get to the bottom of what has happened here and ensure it never happens to any other victim."
