French Bulldogs' popularity soars in Qld

They're the latest fad of the four-legged variety and they're popping up in family homes throughout Queensland.

Registrations for French bulldogs have almost tripled over the past two years, according to Dogs Queensland.

"They are such a unique dog with such a funny personality, and they make you laugh," Gold Coast breeder David Swift told AAP.

"They love to be around people, and just sit on the lounge."

Almost 850 French bulldogs were registered in Queensland last year, compared to just 316 in 2013.

Celebrity owners such as Lady Gaga have sparked an online fanaticism, with one 'Mannie the Frenchie' in Chicago boasting more than 950,000 Instagram followers.

"We've seen a big increase in the past few years, mostly young families ... but we urge people to do their homework before buying," Mr Swift said.

They don't come cheap, with some fetching excess of $5000 per puppy.

Despite the breed's new-found popularity, it hasn't been able to top the Staffordshire bull terrier, which sits at number one on Queensland's list of registered dogs for the fourth year in a row.

More than 15,000 dogs were registered in the state in 2015.
