Fraser Island oil clean-up nears end

The clean-up on World Heritage-listed Fraser Island is almost over, a week after oil patties began washing up across a 60km stretch of beach.

Emergency work crews began removing the oil patties last Wednesday, with workers clearing them by rake and shovel.

Queensland Ports Minister Mark Bailey said follow-up operations would be conducted in the coming weeks to ensure all the oil had been cleared.

Queensland Environment Minister Steven Miles said no wildlife appeared affected by the spill.

Authorities are still trying to trace the source of the oil spill.

"The investigation into the source is continuing and we are happy with the work to date aimed at identifying a group of vessels that may be able to assist us in the investigation," Dr Miles said.

The incident follows an oil spill on the island in July 2015, when 10-15 tonnes of oil was spilled off Cape Upstart.

Maximum fines for a discharge offence can include up to $11.78 million under Queensland law, and $17 million under commonwealth law.
