Former UQ academic on fraud charges

A former university researcher is due back in a Brisbane court to face allegations she dishonestly applied for grant money.

Former University of Queensland academic Caroline Barwood is facing two charges of fraud, two of attempted fraud and two of obtaining a gain from dishonesty.

The university referred Dr Barwood to the Crime and Corruption Commission over a discredited Parkinson's disease study she co-authored, after no evidence could be found that the research was ever carried out.

UQ was forced to ask the European Journal of Neurology to retract the October 2011 research article amid suspicions the study was fabricated.

The university also returned a $20,000 grant it received from a non-government organisation in relation to the research.

Dr Barwood will face the Brisbane Magistrates Court for a committal mention on Monday.

She's yet to enter a plea.
