Former Qld electoral commissioner charged

Queensland's former electoral commissioner has been charged with drug possession two months after he resigned over "serious allegations".

Walter van der Merwe will appear in a Brisbane court next month accused of possessing steroids.

The 56-year-old resigned from his senior public service role on February 14 after he was suspended.

Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath issued van der Merwe with a show cause notice when the "serious allegations" were levelled against him.

The nature of those allegations was unknown until he was charged on Wednesday.

Ms D'Ath issued a statement following the announcement saying she would wait for the Crime and Corruption Commission's report on the matter before she declared it closed.

"The charge announced today is of a very serious nature which must be dealt with through the court process," she said.

"Acting arrangements are in place at the Electorate Commission of Queensland and the recruitment process to permanently fill the position of commissioner is under way."

Van der Merwe will front the Holland Park Magistrates Court on May 1 charged with a single count of possessing a dangerous drug.
