Severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall could spark flash flooding in southeast Queensland over the coming hours, forecasters warn.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning for heavy rainfall for the Gold Coast and Scenic Rim regions, including locations such as Boonah, Beaudesert and Rathdowney, at 2:30pm on Monday.

"Rainfall up to 60mm in an hour has been recorded near the southern border ranges this afternoon," the warning states.
