Five arrested over Brisbane coal protest

A group of protesters have been arrested over an anti-coal demonstration at the headquarters of rail giant Aurizon.

The group were protesting Aurizon's application to the Northern Australian Infrastructure Facility for a $1.25 billion loan to build a rail line linked to the planned Adani Carmichael coal mine.

Five people were arrested for trespassing after refusing a direction to leave the company's Brisbane headquarters around 11am on Thursday.

Aurizon is seeking funds to build the 300 kilometre railway to the Carmichael mine and believes it can construct it more cheaply than Adani, which is also seeking to build the line itself.

Protestor Shananther Wong said Aurizon should back away from the proposal.

"Australians everywhere are deeply opposed to this project. Aurizon will only face more backlash like today's if they go ahead and build this rail line," she said.
