First Qld cyclone could see higher swells

A cyclone that's formed off Queensland could see higher swells affecting the southern coastline from Sunday.

Cyclone Tatiana, the state's first of the season, is about 1080km east, northeast of Mackay and is expected to continue moving away from the coast.

It could strengthen into a category two system by early on Saturday, and forecasters say increasing swells are possible along the southern coastline from late on Sunday or early on Monday.

"It's likely to move further away from the coast over the next few days," Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Chris Joseph told AAP on Friday.

"The only noticeable impact on the coast, at least for the next three or four days, would be increasing swells along the southern coast.
