Firefighting foam traces at GC airport

Traces of the same firefighting foam believed to have caused serious health issues near an army base in Oakey have been detected at Gold Coast Airport.

An Airservices Australia investigation to identify potential historical perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination at the airport discovered "low levels" of the chemical at the airport boundary.

The report says samples taken near a fire training ground and the fire station exceeded the drinking water and recreational screening thresholds, but did not pose a risk to the public as there are "no drinking water sources in the vicinity of these facilities".

The July 2016 investigation targeted soil, ground water and surface water testing across the airport grounds.

PFAS foam hasn't been used at the airport since 2010.

While Airservices Australia believes the results indicate a "potentially low risk" it says it will liaise with NSW and Queensland authorities about further actions that may need to be taken in the wake of their preliminary investigation.

"We are committed to providing relevant information to the community on the progress of investigations in a co-ordinated and consistent way to ensure any community concerns are able to be addressed by the relevant authorities should questions arise," the statement said.
