Residents in the far north Queensland town of Cooktown are being warned to take action with a large bushfire bearing down on the community.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services has 14 crews fighting the blaze, however they're warning they will not be able to protect individual homes.

Residents are advised to leave immediately if they don't have a bushfire plan, with homes in the areas of Poison Creek Road, Minke Road, Starke Street, Unit Street and Railway Avenue expected to be affected within the next two hours.
