Man jailed in Qld for toddler son’s death

A man who inflicted fatal injuries on his toddler son by hurling him against a wall before burning his foot on a kitchen stove has been sentenced to eight years behind bars.

The 29-year-old had earlier pleaded guilty to torture and manslaughter charges stemming from the grave suffering inflicted upon his 13-month-old child around Christmas time in December 2012.

Brisbane's Supreme Court on Thursday heard the crimes were committed when the child was temporarily in his father's care after the man contacted the boy's mother via Facebook.

But what was hoped to be bonding time turned into a torturous and eventually fatal experience for the innocent boy, the court heard.

In sentencing, Justice Roslyn Atkinson activated the man's 14-month suspended term before adding a head sentence of eight years for his crimes against his son.

She also declared him a serious violent offender which means he will have to serve at least 80 per cent of that eight-year term.

Justice Aktinson said he had shown no evidence of genuine remorse despite pleading guilty and, in burning the child's foot on the hot plate, committed a callous and deliberate act.

"There's no sentence I can impose upon you that makes up for the suffering you have cause," she said.

The court heard the man had prior criminal convictions for assault and drunk and disorderly offences and had started abusing alcohol when he was 16 years old.

He was also expelled from school and had a string of troubled intimate relationships, it was heard.

In her remarks, Justice Aktinson noted the man had thrown the child shortly after the toddler showed signs he didn't want to be near his father.

Later, she said paramedics tried to save him but the child eventually died in hospital when he couldn't be revived and his life support was switched off.

The court heard autopsy results revealed significant injuries including bruising across the young boy's body.
