A father accused of assaulting his teenage son before the boy was shot by Queensland police has been granted bail.

The 43-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faced the Ipswich Magistrates Court on Friday on three counts of assault occasioning bodily harm.

His charges relate to an incident at the family home on Wednesday, where police responded and shot the 16-year-old after he allegedly lunged at them with a knife.

In granting bail, magistrate Regina Sturgess barred the man from approaching his wife or son and returning to their home.

He is due to return to court on March 9.

The boy is being treated in the Princess Alexandra Hospital for a wound to his torso and is expected to make a full recovery.

The police shooting is being examined by the Ethical Standards Command.
