Two people have died in a suspected crash between two light aircraft in Queensland.

It is understood a single-occupant glider and an ultra-light aircraft collided at Gympie Airport in Kybong at 2.45pm on Wednesday.

Inspector Brad Inskip said the investigation was in its early stages but evidence suggested the two aircraft had one man each on board.

"There's no doubt about it, this is a tragic incident and quite a graphic scene left there for all of the emergency services, those who have responded and for the witnesses," Inskip said.

"This is a little local airport where many people in the community are here together.

"The gliding club is obviously very close, it's a small little regional gliding club, they all know each other so this is going to the community very hard."

Inskip said there is evidence to suggest the two aircraft collided mid-air but police could not confirm this at this stage.

"It's honestly too early to know," he said.

"There is evidence to suggest this has occurred but we're not ruling anything out at this stage."

Inskip said police were working on confirming the identities of the two people killed and tracking down their families.

He said the glider left the local gliding club but at this stage police are not sure where the ultra-light aircraft came from.

"At this stage we're not sure where the ultra-light came from, whether it took off from here or took off from somewhere else and was coming here," Inskip said.

Police will also examine two scenes as they continue their investigation.

"We've got two scenes in a paddock nearby, they are probably 200 metres apart and spread across a bit of a distance," Inskip said.

"The investigation will involve mapping those two scenes, examining the aircrafts (as well as) witness statements and interviews."
