Fardon 'not worth risk': child advocate

A high profile child protection advocate says any threat to Queenslanders by sex offender Robert Fardon is too much, as judges consider whether is he likely to attack more women.

Lawyers for Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath have appealed a Supreme Court judge's ruling in August the 69-year-old's risk to the community had subsided with age.

Fardon has a history of attacking women dating back to the 1960s and has been under a Dangerous Prisoner (Sex Offender) Order since his release from prison in 2013, but will be unsupervised in the community when that expires on October 3.

Ms D'Ath is appealing a Supreme Court decision in August to dismiss her request to extend the supervision order.

Leaving him unsupervised is not a risk that the community wants to take, Bravehearts founder Hetty Johnston says.

"He has committed heinous crimes, he is out of jail, but it makes absolutely every bit of sense to monitor him because of who he is and if he does nothing wrong that shouldn't be a problem for him."

The state opposition says laws pushed through parliament by the Queensland government earlier this month are not a good enough fall back should the appeal fail.

The laws ensure repeat offenders are monitored for life once they are released from jail.

"We have to make sure we protect the public from this bloke who has a record a mile long with regards to sexual offences against children," Liberal National Party Deputy Leader Tim Mander said on Wednesday.

Fardon's victims have said they are terrified by the prospect of him being unsupervised.

The Court of Appeal has reserved its decision.
