Famous Maccas arches burn in fiery blaze on Gold Coast

The iconic golden arches of a McDonald's outlet on the Gold Coast turned an even greater shade of yellow after spectacularly catching fire last night.

Fire crews and police rushed to the fast food 'restaurant' at Biggera Waters, after reports of the blaze breaking out as evening commuters made their way home.

Footage of the fire posted to Instagram by miss_baby_blue show the 20-metre tall roadside sign burning out of control and churning out plumes of black smoke.

Healthy eating advocates and anti-capitalist activists will no doubt attach some cultural significance to the sight of yellow and orange flames licking and flickering around the famous giant M.

McDonald's is the world's largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants, and in modern times has increasingly found itself under pressure over its environmental, health and labour record.

The company, which was founded in 1940, now serves around 68 million customers daily in 119 countries across 35,000 outlets.

No one was injured in the Biggera Waters incident. It is understood the fire was sparked from an electrical fault.
