Extra police sent in after Qld riot

Extra police have been sent to the remote Aboriginal community of Aurukun after a riot on Friday night.

Two officers were assaulted, police cars were damaged and the police station was vandalised.

The trouble began when police were called to a street disturbance involving a large number of people and an officer accidentally ran over a man's foot.

He was flown to Cairns for treatment and a second disturbance broke out later in the night.

Two officers sustained minor injuries, the police station had minor damage and windows were smashed on police cars.

A man, 20, is expected to front the Cairns Magistrates Court on Monday, charged with assaulting police and wilful damage of police property.

A woman, 19, has been charged with assaulting police and is due in court next month.

Three other people are facing public nuisance charges.

On Saturday night, police and local elders negotiated the return of a Queensland Health retrieval vehicle, allegedly stolen some hours earlier.

The vehicle had some mechanical damage, but no charges have been laid over that incident.
