Eleven drown on Qld beaches in 2015/16

Surf lifesavers say the 11 drowning deaths on Queensland's beaches during the past six months were entirely preventable.

Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) chief operating officer George Hill said while volunteer lifesavers had rescued 1355 people during the patrol season, the number of deaths had increased compared to the previous year, when eight people died.

But he said none of those deaths occurred in places being patrolled by lifesavers.

"Tragically, all of these 11 drownings have either occurred at unpatrolled locations or outside of patrol hours, which is extremely disappointing and something we'll continue to address," he said.

The organisation will hold events on the Gold coast, Sunshine Coast, Hervey Bay and North Queensland on Sunday to remember those who died during the 2015/16 patrol season, which ends on Monday.
